It's been a long time since I made the trek down to the Horseshoe Tavern for a show. On this night however I wasn't the only one making the trip down the 400. The second Nu Music Night of the year at the Horseshoe featured Barrie's Brett Caswell and his band The Marquee Rose. Brett (guitar, keys, and lead vocals) and the band consisting of Lincoln Hamyl (bass), Sarah Morano (fiddle), Dave Murray (guitar, keys), Brandyn Aikins (drums) and Carleigh Aikins (backup vocals) played a short set or songs from the upcoming release "A New Balance", Brett's first full length solo album.
Brett's songs can be described very catchy pop tunes with a country rock feel featuring some Ben Fold's like keys and some gripping violin layering. One of my current favourites "Guilty" can be found at his myspace page. Also check out "Vacant Heart" and "Fool Me Once" from the "Love Waiting" EP.
Brett and The Marquee Rose really shine as a unit pooling together experience from their other bands "Fox Jaws" and "The Sonora Aero Club". Brett's energy is evenly matched by Sarah Morano's fiddling and anytime you can get Carleigh Aikins on vocals you are in for a great night.
The band are playing another show in Toronto at The Garrison on Saturday Jan 19th.
